Pros and Cons

Benefits of Using a Camera Phone

  1. Easy to use- simply point and click
  2. Quick & Convenient- pull your phone out of your pocket and snap a photo
  3. Less bulky- you already carry your phone around with you, why carry an extra camera
  4. Real life- document anything in real time without looking like a reporter
  5. Good quality- you can still get good quality pics if you are careful

Drawbacks of Using a Camera Phone

  1. Very little control- you can't change any settings besides the very basic ones
  2. No motion control- action shots may come out blurry
  3. Weak or no flash- low-light situations may come out grainy
  4. Extra work- You may be able to fix some problems using post-processing, but this requires more work

Camera phones can take good pictures too

We all know that taking a picture on a camera phone will not come close to the quality you will get using a DSLR camera or even a point-and-shoot digital camera. I'm not saying that you should run around snapping photos on your phone, but you can get some nice pictures with a bit of work. My phone has a 8 megapixel camera , which is large enough to create detailed pictures that aren't tiny, but anything over 5 megapixels should be suitable.

Camera phones don't let you adjust any settings while taking pictures, making them harder to use in low light and in fast moving situations. Since they are just basic cameras, they are a no-frills way to capture the true essence of a moment. If you are beginning to learn photography, it might be beneficial to start using a very simple camera such as the one on your phone. It will let you learn how to properly frame a subject, compose the photo, and use the natural light.

You may notice that some of these photos are slightly grainy, and this is due to the low light levels of the picture. Camera phones are not optimal for high quality magazine photos, but can be excellent for documenting everyday activities that might be interesting. You can easily become a photo journalist by using your phone to capture provocative situations or beautiful scenery. While they may not be able to be used on the front cover of a newspaper, they can be an excellent addition to online articles, personal portfolios, or creative works of art. If you spend a couple minutes touching up the picture in Photoshop or GIMP, you can easily have a beautiful picture at a fraction of the cost of buying a quality digital camera.

Check out some of these photos that I took on my Droid Incredible 2. Might not be the best pictures in the world, but they certainly aren't the worst, especially since I didn't have to buy a special camera!

not true, there are a number of settings on the smartphone cameras that can be adjusted.

You are correct that some smartphones have the ability to adjust major settings such as exposure, sharpness, and contrast. Some even allow for stylized photos, making them an even better tool for amateur photographers. However, some older, non-"smart" phones do not have these settings and cannot compare to the versatility of a dedicated digital camera. Smartphone camera technology will continue to get better, making them a more valuable investment for any photographer.

Thanks for the tips. I have a Nikon S3100 (14MP) and a Blackberry (2MP) and have been looking to learn how to take better photos.

Shooting pictures with mobile phone cameras is easy and convenient. Even if you cannot adjust settings, you can capture a good enough image if you pay attention to light. As you said, it is a great way to record events that happen around you.

Cool hub! I take all my pictures with my camera phone and they turn out pretty decently, if I do say so myself! All the pictures in my Teton's hub were taken by a Galaxy S from T-Mobile and I was impressed-- they were better than my cheap sony camera, whose sole is to take photos! Congrats on the Hubnuggets nominee!

Yes there are moments when you want to take a photo when I discover I don't have my cam with me. Now I know what kind of cell phone I would be buying next...a camera that can take pretty decent pictures! :)

Congratulations on your Hubnuggets nomination. To all who would like to read and vote and support the Hubnuggets, this way please: http://enellelamb.hubpages.com/hub/HubNugget-Myste
